Column Radiators - Heated Columns Like Roman Baths

There is a great comedy sketch in a film that in its day was very controversial where the question is asked about the Romans and what have they done for us?

The answer of course is a great deal especially if you happened to live in what is now England a couple of thousand years ago.

Whilst the English were a bunch of great unwashed the Romans set about building public baths and villas with underground heating. When the Romans left 400 years after arriving on our shores we all went back to the world of unwashed right up to the middle of the twentieth century when most working peoples’ homes had no bathroom.

The average small terraced house as seen in one of the UK’ s most popular TV soap operas had an outside WC and perhaps once a week the occupants would enjoy the treat of a tin bath filled with hot water in front of the lounge or kitchen fire.

Arguably the bathroom is now the single most important room in the house. Without it we have no toilet or place to wash and prepare for work or bed.

One of the greatest home improvements of the past forty years is central heating. Until the 1970’s very few home owners could afford it. An open coal burner was the norm with perhaps a two bar electric or gas fire.

The arrival of easy credit in the seventies suddenly meant even the poorest householder could afford a brand new central heating system to be paid over a number of years. Every home owner was so delighted that they never once looked the gift horse in the mouth and asked what sort of radiator was going to be fitted.

The flat white panel radiator was the answer and that’s exactly what millions of homes received.

For those that remember those days then looking through the huge selection of radiator choice at somewhere like Designer Radiators Direct will be a very pleasant surprise. From beautiful polished chrome column radiators to mirrored effect there is something for every taste.
