The unique features of Column radiators

The very first radiators, back in the 19th century, were cast iron column designs, and this is a style which remains very popular to this day; evoking memories of schools and churches for many people. The retro style is an increasingly common choice for home décor. We offer a range of radiators in this style, including the MHS Clasico, Paladin Edwardian models and the Paladin Victoriana; the latter replicates the style of the first radiators to become popular in Britain in the Victorian era.

Traditional designs, like the Victoriana and the Paladin Kensington and Oxford models, can be decorated with baroque metalwork detail and antique paint effects, to enhance the old fashioned effect.

Column radiators are by no means limited to an old fashioned design, though, and the style’s enduring popularity has seen it develop and modernise a great deal. The Reina Neva, for example, fuses the horizontal column and panelled styles, and the stylish Reina Bonera incorporates columns of different widths in a way which, while remaining efficient and functional, illustrates how a radiator can be an artistic and stylish feature of a room in itself. The wavy style of the curved MHS Tesi Runner is another example of the aesthetic variations which the column design allows for.

There are also energy advantages to column radiators, with many considering them to be more efficient than panel radiators. The distribution of the heat across the surface area of the individual columns leads to an agreeable radiant heat which is perfect for large, high-ceilinged spaces that require a lot of warmth. Along with their often traditional style, this explains the popularity of column radiators in older period properties. They’re easy to customise in terms of size, with columns easily added or removed according to your width preference.
