Why It’s Important That You Service Your Radiators Regularly

Many people service their boilers; this is a good thing, because a faulty boiler can be fatal.

However, few people service their radiators; this is probably because the result is never fatal (well, I’m sure there’s some freak event that could prove fatal, but in general, they’re extremely safe)

However, it’s important to service your radiators regularly, and below, we’re going to explain why. While your health is unlikely to suffer too much as a result, you could encounter some extremely expensive problems if you simply allow your radiators to run without ever servicing them

Savings on Your Heating Bills

Heating costs are the third largest expense for many families, following rent/mortgage and food spends. A well-maintained central heating system can help you to ensure that you keep the cost of running the system to a minimum. It will ensure that the radiators are efficient and that you're not wasting energy needlessly.

You might not think that it can cost that much more to heat an inefficient system, but it can cost you an extra £2 a day and that soon adds up.

Voided Warranties

When you buy new radiators and boilers, even cheap radiators and boilers, they will have a warranty (unless buying second hand or from abroad). These warranties can be anywhere from five to twenty years.

This is fantastic; it means that you don’t have to worry if the boiler/radiator breaks down. They’ll come out and fix or replace it…

…that is, unless you’ve have voided the warranty. Many times, you can void the warranty simply by not having the system serviced annually.

You need to read the small print that comes with your boiler/radiators and see if an annual service is part of the warranty condition. If it is, then you must service it regularly to ensure that you remain covered by the warranty.

Burst Pipes/House Insurance/Stress

If you don’t service the system annually or biannually, then the results can be disastrous. The most common problem is a burst pipe. When this happens, you can experience widespread problems throughout the home. A burst pipe can cause extensive damage.

If you have failed to maintain the system, your insurance company may not pay out when you make a claim. Lack of maintenance is one of the most frequent reasons for the insurance companies not paying out.

You will have to foot the repair bills yourself and this can be extensive. They include:

  • Replacing pipes, radiators and boilers
  • Hiring dehumidifiers to remove the water from the home
  • Hiring a wet vacuum to mop up any excess water
  • New carpets, paint work and interior structure (e.g. floor boards and plaster board)

As you can imagine, that can cause quite a lot of stress.

Regular services are particularly important if you buy cheap radiators or if you buy radiators second hand, because these are the most susceptible to problems.

We hope that you now have a much better appreciation of why it’s important to regularly service your radiators and boilers.
