The Move from Practical to Practical & Stylish Radiators

The radiator industry is changing. In the past, radiators were simply a matter of functionality and practicality, i.e. they were there to provide warmth.

Not anymore. No, now, we find radiators that offer all of that plus more: they add a focal point to the room, working as an art installation as well as a heater.

With brands, such as Hudson Reed and Chatsworth radiators, we’re no longer tied down to the traditional style of radiator; we can have beautiful radiators instead. This is truly the era of postmodernism, where aesthetics and functionality combine…, or something like that!

Designer Radiators
You might have noticed the massive increase in the number of designer radiators on the market. If you haven’t, then you might well have been living under a rock, either that, or you don’t much care for DIY (maybe you don’t own your own home yet, or you still live with your parents). For those of you who are responsible for your own property, you can’t have missed this upward trend for designer radiators.

There are so many choices available, it’s quite simply amazing. Let’s look at some of the best designs:

1.    Infinity mirror radiators: these are truly amazing. They combine three features in one. They’re radiators, they’re mirrors, and they’re artistic.
2.    Shelved radiators: you’ll usually find these in the bathroom. These look like normal towel radiators underneath, but at the top sport, one or two shelves for storing even more towels. These are great because they give you a place to store your towels while they’re not in use and they don’t become musty or mouldy.
3.    Purely artistic radiators: these come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. We’ve seen paper clips, African arts, fish shapes, and all sorts. It’s actually quite fascinating, so if you have time, do a quick Google search and see for yourself.

When Did This Trend Star to Happen?
In the UK, we didn’t much care about fashion until the 90s. Just look at how we dressed in the ‘80s – no one could say that ever looked good! OK, so we did have nice fashions in the ‘50s and ‘60s, but we were much less concerned with our appearance as we are today. In fact, the internet probably heralded in the mass focus on appearance: it allows us to compare each other, so it’s not surprising really.

In terms of radiators, the first to see the change to designer where the bathroom radiators. Chatsworthradiators and others, started to see a market for attractive radiators in the bathroom. These took off quite substantially – the towel radiator is largely considered designer, for instance and many of you will have one of those. As they became popular, they started to expand the market into the radiators market in general. Today, you can buy designer radiators for any room in your house. It’s great. Interior designers love it because they can create the perfect spaces without being let down by a big old metal rectangle!
