Column Radiators: Advantages Compared to other Designs

More commonly found in schools and churches, this type of radiator seems to be making a bit of a comeback. These radiators are amongst the most affordable, comfortable, yet attractive radiators that you might see. They are equally suited to both traditional and contemporary rooms.

They can be styled to be traditional and have the following advantages compared to other designs and styles:
•    They are easy to install and less cumbersome.
•    Column radiators can are lighter as they are made from light, tubular, steel sections.
•    They are more versatile
•    They can be fully reversible to suit existing floor and return connections.
•    Easy to maintain.
•    Easy to clean.

The tubular steel columns that make them are welded to end pieces at the top and bottom. Numerous sections can be welded together to create a wide range of radiator widths.

A radiator doesn’t have to be stylish and edgy to appear designer. All they require is a simple look and a good heat flow to be just what you need for your home. The desired effect, to match with décor for example, can be achieved by the type of radiator valve you fit or the colour and finish of the radiator itself.

When deciding on the size of radiator you will need, consider the depth first. This depth is denoted by the number of columns the radiator has. Usually the depth consists of 2, 3, 4 or 6 columns.

Radiators with 2 columns are usually only used in an area where only a small amount if heat is needed. 3 columned radiators are the most popular and practical. They are small enough to refrain from protruding too far into the room, but still have a good level of heat output.

Column radiators with a higher number of columns are used for those that require a high heat output, for example in a large room.  These larger radiators usually tend to be vertical (tall and narrow) or horizontal (low and wide) and can be a very decorative piece.
When fitting a column radiator, it should always be placed in the coldest part of the room. This is usually adjacent to a window and/or on an outside wall. This is because cold air pushes the heat around the room and provides the optimum efficiency.

Designer Radiators Direct supplies these radiators in a variety of sizes from numerous designers. They can be purchased in a variety of colours, including the standard white, chrome, anthracite and brushed steel.

To maintain the appearance of your designer radiator, the surface should be cleaned with warm water and a small amount of washing up liquid only. Never use solvents, spray cleaners or abrasive materials as they can have a damaging effect on the finish of the radiator.
